If what you’re interested in is creating the greatest chic style, deciding what type of clothing will dominate the market, which people will dress in it and how, you have to know that what you look is to be is a stylist. This is the most wanted job in the industry right now. But you have to know that stylists cover these three areas or categories:
-Editorial style / Photo shoots style
-Branding consultancy
-Celebrity style
Editorial style: Costume selector.
He’ll take care of clothings, accessories, meaning general aspects of the model for the photo shoot. Besides being quite a wanted job, the stylist works under the guidelines of the magazine or art director, given that they define the session’s theme and what brands will be used.
The stylist essential tools are the Lookbooks, designer collection catalogs, generally seen on a runway. If the stylist finds something useful in it, calls the agency or public relations department of the designer’s brand and asks for the item.
The stylist as a consultant and public relationist
Stylists are hired in different moments of production and clothing exhibition. If he’s involved during the whole process, which is unusual, then he will go to some meetings with the designer, who will show him research, ideas, sketches, and the stylist will give his opinion to place in the right direction the exhibition and distribution. This means to have a visual and stylish baggage to develop his own ideas, necessary to be presented to the designing team. He does not create physical pieces, but he does presents ideas.
The guardian of celebrities image
Here the stylist works with a celebrity, let’s say Brad Pitt, to dress him for an event, for which he will only be for special occasions. In this role the stylist evaluates the brand, with the purpose of making that celebrity image reinforced: respectability, commitment, discipline, amongst others; something very important for the development of the artist personal brand.
What is the holy grail of a stylist?
That’s a pretty tough question, there’s no university course that will get you that job. And the most ambiguous answer is… to have a good eye… or taste. We know, it’s hard. However, using the specialized courses you refine and develop your taste to balance the scale and being a strong candidate.
