Wardrobe Staples for any College Student

Avoid giving the wrong image to your professors and classmates by wearing something that doesn't suit your spirit.

College requires people to do an 180° turn in their lives. It requires them to be a part of the adult world and to be immersed in a place with a different mindset as far as clothing goes. With that in mind, freshman students need to do a renewal of their wardrobes. But this can be done at any point of your academic experience to improve the impact it has on your future. The right outfit can mean the world for college students going to interviews or heading to someone’s house to meet the parents. For that reason, I bring you a simple list of items every college student must have. For male or female, these essentials are slightly different but can be combined to create the perfect personal design for each of them. So, read along and prepare your closet for a shake up!

Assorted sneakers
Black, white, or multi-colored, they are the ideal combo for you. Pick models that can be worn with other items, like jeans or dresses for girls, and jeans and sweatpants for guys. They are comfortable and great items for a quick run up to class or to ran errands, as well for a casual outfit.

Neutral colored tees
Ideally, every closet’s wardrobe should have at least 5 tees in neutral tones. Why? They are easy to combine! The bonus is that if you invest in them, these can last a lifetime of wear and tear. Olive, black, white, gray and sand are the ideal colors for you to shape up a nice and crisp outfit every single time. The best perk? With different accessories as jackets, cardigans, open sweaters and blazers, they can form infinite combinations of outfits.

Simple jeans
I mean the traditional jeans: basic colored. They have to be easy to change up with each top and shoes. Make sure they are comfortable and fit correctly. Remember: fit it’s not tight. So avoid feeling tired of wearing your pants at the end of the day. For girls, in this category, a high waisted pair of jeans it’s a necessity, as you can tuck any tee or sweater and create a new combination.

Colored and patterned tees
Pops of color are allowed and encouraged in your wardrobe. These pieces have a less combinable nature but can add the extra fun to your outfit. Striped, polka-dotted, with a fun printed t-shirt, they’re great options. They can be layered or you can add an accessory like a scarf to change it up a bit.

Jacket
A great jacket is your best friend. The ultimate layering tool. Jackets are fun ways to spice up any outfit for a chilly day or a night out. Remember to invest in them, as they are going to resist some wear as you’ll never want to take them off. A black leather jacket it’s quintessential, and you have million of models to pick from.

Business look
Remember the blazer? Well, they are a key piece in this outfit. Serious and formal wardrobe are essentials, they need to be present on your closet. The reason why? They are vital for interviews and presentations. Pick at least two tops and you can almost surely use the same bottom and shoes. Remember to keep shoes and bottoms classic and neutral for you to use them when needed. Just change the top and you are good to go.

Sport Outfit
College needs to be a place where you love yourself first. So, pack a sports outfit and wear them frequently. Get involved in physical activities such as sports and yoga, as they are great for both your mind and body. Make them comfortable and make sure to take them out to do physical exercise at least three times a week.

Scarfs
For chilly nights or days when you want to add a simple extra, the use of scarfs it’s ideal. They are cheap additions to your wardrobe and ideally, you can use them over simple tees or patterned ones, to make something look completely different. For girls, this is especially important, as there are various ways to transform a simple scarf into the star of an outfit.

Combine these outfits to make something unique for your personality and needs. Remember, college is a place to fully know and express yourself, so enjoy it through your clothes. Use things that make you feel comfortable and that are always pristine to give the best impression possible to professors, possible employers, and even potential romantic interest. Here at Marconi International University, we’ll be waiting to see how you make the world yours using the right clothes!

7 Habits of Highly Successful College Students

Goals are achieved only if you really put your heart into it.

Success is not something that comes by chance. To reach your goals, you need to acquire the right mindset and prepare your whole life to achieve those goals. Ideally, you have to put yourself first and work to reach the finish line. For that reason, learning how to achieve and work it’s a full-time job, and sometimes, you need to learn certain things in order to get what you want in the end. For that reason, self-help books are at the top of people’s minds when it comes to improving their lives. One of the most sought-after tomes is “7 Habits of Highly Effective People” by Stephen Covey. In this book, you can find keys to increase your engagement to your goals and achieve better results in the long run. But what if I told you that there are habits that are almost perfectly made for college students, and that can help you achieve what you want. Well, they’re a fact and they’ve helped me, and people all over the world, achieve their goals in superior education levels.

1st Habit: Be prepared for class
Before going to bed, do-over your bag and college assignments. This way, you’ll be prepared all the time. Make sure to pack what you’ll need, put your keys in its place, find snacks and water, among other things that you need to take and you’ll have fewer things to worry about. Preparing for the class also includes reading the lesson before starting it, that way your brain will pick up the information right away.

2nd Habit: Have snacks at hand
Don’t forget about your stomach while studying and attending classes. Most professors will now frown upon snacks at class or in hallways, so make sure to carry some healthy options at hand. This will help keep your sugar levels under control and will avoid the dreaded sluggish feeling that you get when you are tired and hungry. Small fruit portions, natural bars, homemade whole cookies and bags of nuts are great options. Water and smoothies need to be on this list too, as dehydration is a serious concern for thought process too.

3rd Habit: Study every day
One of the first things that you need to do in order to be successful at college is to create study habits. One of those is reading lessons every single day. Check your planning and make sure to dedicate at least two hours of the day to re-read lessons. That way, the information will be attained in a more effective way when it’s required, for example during a test or a quick question in class.

4th Habit: Take breaks
College should not be taken as a prison sentence. You need to remember that you have to keep on doing important things, yes, but also take much-needed breaks from time to time. Let go of books and worries and focus on yourself from time to time. Take a relaxing bath, learn how to meditate or do yoga, all of those consists of nice breaks for your mind and soul. That way, you can focus your mind after the break in the things that are really important.

5th Habit: Learn to take notes
In this blog, we’ve spoken about how to take notes, and for a good reason: notetaking it’s an important skill for students! Notes are short portions of texts, simple analysis of texts or cues to study, and they are great for a quick do-over before a test. They are also important for you to prepare for future lessons, and to fixate information in a way that’s more simple and easy to understand for you.

6th Habit: Don’t compare yourself
Comparing yourself to classmates is the first way of undermining your motivation. Remember to keep your mind focused on your goals. Avoid thinking that some other person did this or that and you didn’t, just keep in mind what you have to do in the future. If there’s room for improvement, then go ahead, but don’t hold yourself to other’s standards. You go at your own pace and make the experience completely yours.

7th Habit: Get out of your comfort zone
College is the place to growth, and one of the things score-driven college students tend to forget is the world of experiences that open up in campuses. This is the time to enroll in an extra-academic course, take a theater class, explore another language, take a new sport, or even dancing lessons. These experiences will enrich your life, and make you release stress, allowing you to be more focused when it comes to academic areas.

Here at Marconi International University, we like to encourage our students to be incredibly successful. This will help them reach their goals and, in turn, help us educate incredible professionals for the work field. Learn about the many different classes you can take and how we offer options for students to know about other cultures.

For any student to reach their goals, they need to do certain things.

How to Take Notes Correctly

One of the most important things for college students is a handy book with notes.

College is for people that know how to turn themselves into highly efficient people. For that reason, one of the first things you need to do when you are in college is investing in your own growth. A valuable asset for you is to acquire note taking skills. This will prove to be highly valuable for you in your academic and labor field, as having notes done correctly can mean the difference between a correct and wrong answer in a test. Why? Because, sometimes, during lessons and courses, professors give out helpful hints at subjects that might be brought up in tests in the future. This is especially helpful if this is your first semester, as the notions will help you during your route to graduation.

There are a few helpful tips to note-taking:
  • Read ahead: Nothing compares to knowing what’s going to be talked about in your course. It’s ideal for you to know the subject beforehand, so you can take notes in a much efficient manner.

  • Create your own system: Every single one of us has the power to create something unique to take notes. Creating easy to follow indications for our notes it’s ideal. Maintain the system and it will be easier to understand them in the future.

  • Keep them short: Use short phrases, words and even simple draws and symbols to keep your notes in order. Remember, brevity is vital as you need to be able to review them quickly. They should be done quickly and be easy to explain to yourself and others, so don’t sacrifice understandable notes for shortening your notes.

  • Use highlighters: Another great way of taking notes is highlighting important notions. Concepts, things your professor stresses during class, all those things have potential to be test subjects. Use them with conscience, and maybe use more than one color, coding them according to what you want to highlight.

  • Pass them to another paper: You can take simple notes in a paper, but most importantly, you need to understand them. While taking notes in class, most of the times you do it quickly, skipping words and jumbling content. Take time to pass them to a clean paper, preferably a three ring binder. Add extra info, sketches, diagrams or mental maps, that will make them more effective.

Here at Marconi International University, we want every single of members of our student community to shine brightly in their academic assignments, and that needs to be done through an integral change in how you see the experience. Changing up your habits and learning how to take notes will help you reach the success you want! Make sure to check our website to find what alternatives fit better to your particular needs.

“The art of effective listening is essential to clear communication, and clear communication is necessary to management success.”
James Cash Penney

Learn how Meditation can Help you Score Higher Grades

Prepare yourself for sucess giving your mind and body a much needed rest.

Breathe in. Breathe out. Breathe in. Then out again. That was relaxing, right? For years, people have known the importance of breathing to calm down, but have ignored the fact that taking deep breaths are also a form of meditation. For college students that extra calm can make the difference between a high grade and a low score. Why is this? Relaxed minds can process information at a higher pace, making it vital for times of high pressure to stay calm. One of the things that can help you get to this state is the meditation.

But for some, learning how to meditate can be a hard thing to do. Distractions, fast shooting thoughts, and worries can be completely disturbing. They can refrain you from getting into the right mood to allow your brain to prepare for handling stressful activities. Do you want to learn how to meditate in simple steps? One of the first things you need to know is that you don’t have to be a totally silent place. When you are mindful and driven, you can even meditate while on the subway or in a crowded coffee shop. With that in mind, I will give you my tips to stay focused.

  • Sit up straight or lay back completely still: While sometimes you cannot pick when and where you’ll need it, you’ll need to prepare your body for it. Straightening your back will increase the engagement of your core (down your abdomen) which is the center of your body control. It also allows better breathing and blood flow.

  • Control your breathing: Oxygen is fuel for the body, and, when you control your breathing, you prepare your body to relax. Take deep breaths, then hold them in place for 5 seconds and exhale through your mouth. Repeat several times, engaging your lungs and diaphragm. The first times, you’ll feel it tighten up, but eventually, you’ll see how relaxing this is.

  • Think of something placid: While some people seem to think to clear your mind it’s easy, it’s actually a hard feat. Concentrate on breathing and having a thought that makes you calm. Sometimes, music can help you achieve that relaxed state.

  • Concentrate in your limbs: Another way to let go of the stress and relax, is by concentrating on your fingers and toes. This way, you don’t have to focus on other distracting factors. You can massage your hands, finger by finger. That will make it more relaxing.

Practice and I assure you that you’ll find every place calm enough to meditate. That way, you’ll have your mind prepared to face whatever challenge the world throws your way. Here at Marconi International University, we encourage our students to be mindful and to have the perfect mindset to face the academic challenges that will make them successful professionals. Try meditation and see how you get better at everything you endeavour.

If you are relaxed, your chances at concentrating are better.

Bachelor
This is the first degree obtained at a higher education level. Another name for this degree is Undergraduate or Baccalaureate Degree. The completion of this level requires and an approximate of 40 collegiate courses, and 120 hours of academic work divided into 4 years. These are often given by regionally accredited institutions. It’s the most basic degree that you can obtain at a superior level. The term for the degree depends on the institution that accredits it and the nature of the degree itself, as there are Bachelor of Arts (B.A.), Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) and the Bachelor of Science (B.S.)

Masters
To pursue a Masters you need to have a previously approved and finished Bachelor’s degree related to the field of the master. This conforms another level of high education, and it’s known as the first graduate course you take. It requires up to 2 years of full-time study and it’s in the limits of 36 to 54 credits, divided into 12 or 18 college courses. Most Masters are taken in person, but some institutions offer programs for online learning courses. The term used to style one’s title depends on the nature of the master itself, being prevalent the Master of Arts (M.A.), Master of Business Administration (M.B.A) and Master of Science (M.S.)

Doctorate
A Doctorate is the higher level course that one can take as far as academic progress go. It’s often named as the final or terminal degree in a career and it doesn’t necessarily require the completion of a master's degree to obtain it, but this depends on the nature of the doctorate itself. The doctorate it’s not related to the medical degree, as you can acquire a doctorate for every field of work. The duration of the doctorate is around four years, and can be reduced to three or 2 and a half if you hold a previous and equivalent master’s degree in your preferred field of work. It required the completion of 90 to 120 credits, that equivalate to 30 to 40 courses. What’s the Importance of Sleeping When You are a College Student?

In order to have a better performance, it's integral for your body to rest.

Sleep is one of the misunderstood habits of humanity. It’s a physiological need to rest and recharge energies, which are necessary for the body to recycle and renew its cells. And while the phrase “Sleep is for the weak” it’s a mantra, the fact is that without it, our body would simply fail and shut down. Parent inherently know that their kids need to take naps to help them in their growth process, yet somehow it’s often misunderstood when it comes to grown-ups. Teenagers and young adults tend to dismiss the importance of a good sleep session when it comes to being productive and keeping mind and body balanced.

Why do you need to sleep?
Sleeping it’s a necessity that we as humans have. It’s important that you understand exactly what happens when you go to bed. Your brain needs rest, and sleep is the only way to achieve it: while you sleep, neurons lock the information and archive it properly, making it more achievable in the future. It also helps other physiological processes, like the cleanse and detox of the body while at rest, the renewal of the cells and such.

Ideally, you need to refrain from messing with your internal clock and resting time, as this harms the way your body works. If you skip sleep or have an irregular routine, your body will react as in an emergency. It’s more likely that you’ll gain weight, retain liquids, have digestive problems and headaches, among other things.

How can I improve my sleep?
While most people don’t have trouble sleeping, for others is important to know how to make themselves fall into Morpheus's arms without much trouble. For that reason, specialists recommend a series of techniques and habits to make your body relax right before your head hits the pillow, increasing the chances of having a restful night. So, read them and implement them right away.
  • Set a bedtime routine: Much like little kids, adults need a bedtime routine. Stick to it and make it functional for you.
  • Take a warm bath before setting to sleep: That cleans your body while relaxing it.
  • Avoid sugary drinks or coffee anytime around bedtime: These make you unrestful and excited, and those two are bad for sleeping.
  • Avoid screens: Tvs, smartphones, tablets, computers, or any screen take a toll on your sleep. Avoid using them at least 30 minutes before going to bed. Don’t take the phone to bed.
  • Make yourself some tea: While people frown with tea, the truth is it helps your body relax, and some infusions take it an extra step and make you feel ready to bed.
  • Go to bed early: When you want to go to bed, you need to make sure that you are getting the right amount of sleep. 6 hours is the minimum for your body to recharge.

You, as a college student, need to learn how to take care of your body for it to take you through the most important time of your life. Remember, you need to be always at 100% in order to achieve whatever goals you set yourself in your academic life. And for that, Marconi International University is there to help. This post is created to make their students rest, and be on top of their game every single time, making them excellent professionals in the future. Secrets to Excel At College

Here are some tips and tricks for you to exceed at college.

There are several things in the mind of a college student. One of the main concerns for every single one of them is how they are going to manage to cram up the time to socialize, sleep and do great in their academic assignments. For any person that’s in this level of scholarly demand, the requirements are high: several classes a day, frequent test, and the pressure of doing it great, while simultaneously sharing time with the people they love. Add the extra of work, and you might think that’s an impossible feat to accomplish. But let me tell you: It’s not! You can actually do great at all those things if you have the right help. And for that, we have several handy tips to help you reach the academic goals you set. You can apply those tips to other areas like work or social interactions. Stretch time and make it great for you!

  • Get a practical bag: Use a bag that’s practical for you, one where you can get a laptop, books and journal all in one. Avoid having to carry several bags to store your things. The best thing you can get it’s one sturdy backpack that will last you for a long time. It’s a great product to invest on.

  • Wake up early: If you wake up earlier, believe it or not, you are more productive. It’s about the way your body perceives time, and how much time you get during the day. This is a time you can use to study before class, eat something before leaving, or just checking what needs to be done. That way, nothing will be missed.

  • Go to bed early: Resting it’s an important part of the habits of every college student. If you don’t go to bed at the right time, chances are that you are in dire need of several cups of coffee the next day. Remember, you need more than 6 hours of rest for your body to fuel up and recharge.

  • Meet your old friends: Sometimes, you can get caught up in many other things and leave your friendships aside. Friends are an integral part of the support system for every single person. Remember to give them the necessary love and affection. Are they far? Well, then text, Facetime, call from time to time. Contact with them, both of you will appreciate it.

  • Don’t shy from college friendships: To excel in college you need to interact with classmates, do study groups, and interact with other people. Remember, these are going to be with you down the road, so befriend them and enjoy the time you spend in their company.

  • Give yourself some time: You need to set aside time for yourself. Whether to walk, to nap, to do sports, yoga, meditate. Whatever you pick, make sure that’s an activity that helps you relax and release. College can be incredibly stressful, that’s why you need to allow yourself some solo time to connect with your mind and body.

  • Study every day: One thing that people seem to forget it’s how easy it is for content to pile up. For you to have the best chance at acing your test, my recommendation is to study every single day. Check that lesson you saw in the morning or the day before. That way you’ll store the information in your brain more efficiently.

Here at Marconi International University, we want every single student in our corp to be more successful and to excel with their academic classes. That’s why we put in their hands the tools to reach the goals they set, and the motivation necessary to transform them into citizens of the world with the degree they choose to pursue in our installations.
