5 Tricks to Combat Homesickness

Homesickness is a terrible feeling, but you can't let it get the best of you.

One of the things that hit college students harder is the fact that, for a great chunk of that population, enrolling in an higher level institution means traveling far away from home, setting physical distance from all they’ve known for years. This is an incredibly hard decision to take, and once you are settled in your dorm, or when you feel sick or stressed it hits you harder: you’re away from those you know and in which you can count and have leaned on for a great deal of your life. Amazingly, this is one of the hardest things a college student has to face: the homesickness.

This feeling is incredibly strong and while for some it’s manageable, it’s always nice to have a bag of handy tricks to combat it, and here at Marconi International University, we want to give you 5 of those tricks, so that your experience in college is easier and more comfortable even with the homesickness monster roaming around.

Try local Experiences: When you’re in a new city, there are certain things they do that might not be habitual for you. Local experiences, like talking a walking over a park or a particular tour for the touristic attractions are great things to do when it comes to getting off your melancholy for your family and friends back home.

Experience with extracurricular activities: Sports, clubs and all those activities that happen in your college are great ideas to build up friendships and create activities that are perfect to distract you. These also help boost your self-esteem and have valuable things to share with other people in your new location.

Learn to prepare your favorite meals: One of the things that people in college miss the most is the meals back home. A great idea for you is to learn how to prepare the dishes that you love in order to have an instant pick-me-up whenever you feel blue with homesickness.

Work with new groups: Involving yourself with groups in college is ideal, as you have the chance to make your mind forget about what you are missing from homes. Besides, there’s a good chance that these new friends have the same homesickness, and you’ll be battling it together.

Establish friends/family time: While it’s indeed unhealthy to stick to your phone or computer to talk to your family and friends back home all day long, establishing a time just for them it’s ideal. A simple Skype call on fixated hours throughout the week and texting are great options to stay in touch without missing out on your new life. Make it a habit and you’ll release the pressure of homesickness with this valuable time.

Here at Marconi International University, you can experience the world and culture of Italy and Miami without missing out on important things on the matter. With the right mentality, you can reach the best results and combat homesickness with motivation and interesting activities throughout your days!
College students tend to feel homesick, but that can be counteracted!

The Simple Guide on how to Rest Correctly

Even if you are sleeping, it doesn't mean you are resting.

I’m sure that, by now, you’re thinking: “How is this person going to give me a guide on something so simple as resting?” Well, my friend, let me tell you that every single thing you know about resting is completely wrong. While for most people, focusing on a single task for a prolonged period of time makes them feel productive, the reality is that productivity levels plummet after investing a determined period of time in a single task. For that reason, most of us end up exhausted after doing our routinary activities for a while, and it’s the main cause for tiredness and the overwhelming feeling that we hadn't quite picked up, learned or did what we wanted to do in an efficient matter.

What makes a resting session perfect?
While on a daily basis we might find sleep, breaks, and naps, chances are that you’re not using them as effectively as you can. There are a number of factors that make resting sessions perfect, and that enable the people that take them to draw the most energy from it. This means sometimes you’ll need to do your extra effort. You’ll get a chance to recharge if you rest properly. Here are some things that make a recharge session effective.

  • Mental break: If you walk away to a break with your mind still mulling over all the problematics you have, you’ll miss your chance of getting a real break. Make sure to take a mental break from what’s troubling you. Practice disconnection and patience.

  • The right time: Taking a small break (30min) while effective, does not have the same effect as a long (90min or more) one. These two have positive effects for different tasks: small ones are good for academics like studying or passing down notes, while longer ones are ideal for work responsibilities where stress levels are higher.

  • Interact with others: Sometime, socialization is vital for a break. Talk to a friend or do some activity you like while socializing, like taking a coffee or drinking something sweet with friends or coworkers. This will allow you to relax and take a mental break from your current responsibility.

  • Make it physical: Staying in one position for long periods of time can make you feel like resting is impossible, and tend lo leave you exhausted regardless of the demands of it. When you take a break, it’s ideal for you to move, walk and stretch. That will give your whole body a complete break.

  • If possible, nap: Naps are proven sources of relax, and are the staple thing people do when recharging is on their minds. 30 minute naps are incredibly efficient and help boost mental functions like memory and concentration.

Here at Marconi International University, we want you to rest correctly and do the things in the most efficient way possible. Remember that when you have an integral health, you can make the most out of every single moment of your life.

Taking time to enjoy your hobbies is also a way of resting from the pressure of college.

Cloud Storage: A College Student's Best Friend

Being able to access information from any location is vital for a college student.

Let’s say you’re in a hurry to leave for college. For some reason, you are incredibly late and your classes are starting soon. I’m sure that you’ve been in this situation before, and almost all the time something happens: you left your flash drive, computer or tablet, and you need to get a piece of particularly valuable information right away! There’s no time to go back home and get it. But if you are like a great chunk of the world’s population, you’ve heard of cloud storage. Using online resources to storage important information, without having to rely on specific pieces of equipment. You just need a device, user and password and all your important data is there, waiting for you to need it. Sounds like a dream right? Well, in fact, cloud storage has become part of the essential items for college students, and there are good reasons from it aside from the one mentioned above.

Why using cloud storage?
One of the best things about cloud storage is the availability of the content from practically any location with Internet service. While there’s a permanent concern about security, truth is, most of these services offer a backup for the content and show no risks of the information gone missing anytime soon. Here are some reasons why might want to use it.

  • Availability: With any Internet connection, you can access the information right away. You don’t need to carry extra electronic devices aside from ones with an Internet connection in order to get what you need from them.
  • Multiple format storage: Most of these online storage tools are able to save a wide array of formats. Video, image, documents and many other options are supported by the majority of these systems.
  • Free storage: Some of them offer a chance to use their platform for free. And while this is limited, you can still get much done with that amount of space when you’re in a jam. If you want to pay, for a small fee you can get up to unlimited storage.

Here at Marconi International University, we want our students to use all the tools available in the market for them to work and be effective and proactive professionals. More than that, we use online platforms to work programs that are sure to get our student body in the right places when it comes to education. That’s why we also offer online studying programs that help them reach their academic goals in our institution. Make sure to check our social media and website to get more information about the options you have here at Marconi International University.

This is one of the best ways to ensure you have a backup for your information.

What Extracurricular Activities are Better for you?

Extracurricular activities can be academic or physical, and the former are great for your future resume.

Some colleges offer extra activities for students to incorporate into their lives within the facilities, and ideally, these things are tools for them to feel at ease in this new stage. Within this incredible set of academical and physical activities, they have opportunities to socialize and develop their talents, increasing their self-confidence, assurance, and helping them shape passions that will be with them for the rest of their days. More than memories, these activities often offer the chance to increase their future opportunities in the laboral field, and they can even work as releasers of stress and worries in their normal routines. That’s why you might want to take a minute or two to check exactly what extra activities your university has to offer.

But more than that, you need to remember that these activities focused on the personal growth of all members of the academic population. For that reason, there are several options for everyone, and we’re going to talk about how you can fit your personal preferences with extracurricular activities.

Physical extracurricular activities
Sports and related matters often appeal just to a sector of the population. One of the things that make physical activities so atractive is not only the fact that they’re part of your academic setting, but they also help you enhance your physical health and connection to classmates through activities that generate more companionship.

Academic extracurricular activities
If you are a particularly academic persona, then the options for you to participate in more brainy activities are huge. From United Nations activities, to panels or learning another language, these often have a heavy weight in your resume when it comes to the laboral field during college and after graduation.

Social extracurricular activities
Participating with a foundation or charitable activities are not for the weak of heart. In these settings, people that are more emphatic might feel a drain of energy, but they offer a unique opportunity to give back to the world. Helping others often has a humbling and formal effect on people, and allows them to strengthen their personality and talent to handle delicate situations.

Here at Marconi International University, we want you to be a part of your university extra academic activities. These will help you handle stress and increase your connection with your institution and college companions in a unique way, helping you create lasting memories that will make the experience more memorable.

When you're in college, taking the time to experience extracurricular activities is vital for your health.

Reasons why you Should Empty Your Backpack

Having a messy backpack can make your productivity plummet!

A student’s life is incredibly hard. You have a million things to do and little time to tackle it all down. But there’s something that people often miss, and that’s organizing their backpacks. It’s so easy to get caught up in another million things so when you need something out of it, you just don’t have a clue as to where it was! That happens a lot with college students’ backpacks, and this is problematic in more ways than one. Your things can get lost: the documents and damaged binders, broken pens spilling ink all over that important essay that you need to deliver right now… Sounds extreme, right? But hey, it happens! So, to avoid these dreaded problems, you need to clean your backpack right away. Need more reasons? Then keep on reading!

Why should you empty your backpack?
Ideally, the process of cleaning backpacks should be done at least once a week. I’m sure that you are not feeling quite happy about that right now, am I correct? Well, once you know exactly why this is important and vital for your organization, you will change your mind and empty it right away!

  • More organization: A filled backpack rarely is an organized place. Scattered paper, pens, and debris are bound to bounce off and damage the rest of the items inside the bag. So, in order to stay organized, you need to clean it frequently.

  • Less prone to pen accidents: Pens break and spill ink. Markers do the same thing too. It doesn’t have anything to do with you or anything, it’s simply a matter or organization. If you keep them in the right place, in a clean and organized backpack, you are less likely to experience these problems.

  • Easy access to material: Organized and clean backpacks are places where everything is at the tip of your fingers. You know what’s in them and you can access those items without a hitch.

  • Quick disposal of waste: Old papers, food wrappers, pencil shavings, and another great deal of things can get other things dirty and make your backpack even heavier than what is supposed to be.
How to clean your backpack?
Once you understand how important it is for you keep your back clean, it’s time to learn how to do it in a way that’s completely efficient. This will increase your chances at being productive without a doubt.

  • Empty your backpack on a surface: Make sure that this surface is easy to clean, as you don’t really know what’s going to be inside your backpack. Some scraps of paper and little pieces of dirt can get bedding (for example) dirty and so on.

  • Get rid of waste residues: Throw everything you’re not going to use to the waste bin. If you have some damaged notes, then pass them to a clean piece of paper and throw the other. It happens to every sort of waste residue in your backpack.

  • Clean your backpack: The fabric gets dirty too, and in order to look better and be sure that you aren’t facing cross-contamination from the grime inside it, you need to do a thorough wash. This will make it all perfect.

  • Organize the internal items: Binders, pens and every other item that you are used to carrying inside your backpack needs to find a home. Those being portable bags or some other kind of items. You need to make sure to have those elements protected and organized inside your backpack.

  • Weight it: Yes. Sounds strange right? Well, you need to understand that backpacks can not weight more than 10% of your weight tops. Weighing it in might help you decide what do leave home for the normal routine.

Now that you know the benefits, then it’s time for you to learn how to do it correctly. Here at Marconi International University, we want people to enjoy the experience of living college, and for that reason, order and neatness are vital! Once you have all settled down, you can make the most out your routine with a clean and organized backpack!

Regardless of your personal style, bags need to be efficient objects for you!

Sports and College: The Perfect Pair

Playing sports keeps you healthy and boost all your metabolism.

College can be incredibly busy for applied students. Sometimes, you want to have some more hours during the day in order to get more things done and be able to devote some of that time to yourself too. But since extra hours are unlikely to appear out of the blue, you need to find options that help you make the most out of the limited time you have. While for some people it’s a thing cutting off activities that “take time” like something extra in college, or meeting with friends, the reality is that, with organization and preparation, you can do these things while adding one bit of extra that will help your body be packed with energy to face the days ahead.

One of these small things that you can do is having the right amount of physical activity in your day, this will help your body be more prepared to learn and will boost your good mood. For that reason here at Marconi International University, we want you to experience the world in a whole different way, incorporating sports into your habits, and let me explain to you why sports and college are the two parts of a perfect pair.

Your body needs to be in the best shape to learn things correctly, right? The reason for this is that while you might not think it works that way, the reality is that your whole body plays a big role in your understanding of the matters at hand. Remember that every little bit of it it’s engaged with you in order to achieve every goal you set, that’s why it’s so important to keep it in optimum conditions, and that’s done through sports. Why this relationship? Because your brain and body work with hormones and neurochemical transmitters. These are created and regulated through a series of activities not only in the brain, but in the liver, muscles, pancreas and many other parts according to the type of transmitter. But the ones in charge of your mind are a particular kind: these are directly related to the general feeling of your body.

When you have enough exercise in your routine, there’s a good chance that you pick up information faster. The reason for this is that you’re giving your brain a great deal of oxygen and happy hormones, that make it even more productive. It will also have an impact on the motivation you feel. Why? Because it will increase your energy, and you will be more rested since sports and sleeping patterns go hand in hand. But there’s more to it! The promotion of sports in academic fields is not only related to health, many colleges offer programs that give scholarship chances to people that practice sports. You can also participate in sports in your academic institution. This will give you the opportunity to acquire a scholarship or some extra credits at the time of your graduation.

In Marconi International University, we impulse our students to participate in activities that will make them feel motivated, and that will help them, in the long run, having the right amount of energy to face the challenges they will have on their daily basis. It will also help them create a lasting group of friends, and increase their chances at participating in events that will nourish their leadership and companionship skills. What are you waiting to participate in sports team in your academic institution? Let us know your experience with this on the comments, or in our social media profiles!
A person that does physical exercise is less likely to get sick.

Group Study Sessions: Are They for you?

Remember to make the most out of your shared time in group study sessions.

Study sessions are mostly a loner thing for most people. They offer chances for you as a student to acquire knowledge in a self-controlled environment, that way they can pick up information in their own time. But what happens when you have little time to study and a lot of material to work with? Then the best option is to organize group study sessions. Why? Because there’s a distinctive improvement in the cognitive processes when you work with other people to reach your goals. Right now you must be wondering: “How exactly do I know if these group study sessions work for me?” Well, here we are to break it down for you!

Do you have a hard time staying focused?
Group study sessions have one benefit that’s incredibly effective: social pressure. When you are with your peers, if they are a focused group, you’ll have a harder time distracting yourself. Why? Because these people are focused on one important task, and you’ll surely want to stay as focused -and productive!- as them.

Are you stuck on a subject?
If you are having a particularly hard time understanding some lessons, then you can have some solutions to your problem with a study group. They can help you get the necessary information, or even break it down for you to understand the problem or subject more easily. That way you can get it out of the way. This principle also goes to other people, as you can be their problem solver as well.

Is the study subject long?
Sometimes, group study sessions help people break down long study subjects into little and more manageable pieces, helping the group learn and explain it better to others. This type of learning is particularly effective for people that are auditory and kinesthetic, as is gives them the chance to use their senses in order to gather the information.
Did some of these questions ring a bell on you? Then maybe it’s time for you to find or create a group to study. But remember, that they need to be people that are focused on academics, and that have less chances of straying away from the subject at hand in order to talk or distract the group. Once you create a cohesive and effective study group, I’m sure that you’ll see improvement on your academic growth!

Here at Marconi International University, we encourage people to share the knowledge. This can be done by working in study sessions or working out other ways to learn that are as effective and practical for every single member of our student’s body.
Sometimes, the best way to learn is through sharing your knowledge with others.

Are you Pulling an all-nighter?

Make sure to have all the necessary elements to make the most out of your late study sessions.

When you’re in college it’s easy to get carried away. Friends, other classes, gatherings, work and other million responsibilities can leave you little time to study for an upcoming test or writing an essay. We understand that problem, and honestly, don’t feel bad. It can happen even to the best student. Things can get slightly complicated and leave you just one option out: all-nighters. While they are not ideal for your health in terms of rest, sometimes that’s the only choice you have to face a test. That’s why here at Marconi International University, we bring you the best tips to pull an all-nighter.

To pull an all-nighter you need to remember some things: first of all, this cannot happen frequently! While studying at night might be effective for you, the lack of proper sleep gets your body (specially your brain) in emergency mode. Then, the information will be harder to pick up after several all-nighters in a row, and you’ll be wasting valuable sleep hours over nothing practical. For that reason, we recommend to take this route only when this is the only choice, as there are several options for you to make the most out when it comes to studying, that don’t require you sacrificing hours of sleep, and that are as effective as all-nighters, but without the physical damage on the long term.

With that said, here are some handy tips to use when all-nighters are your only option:
  • Get something to drink: Keeping yourself awake it’s vital. While caffeine and energizing drinks are frowned upon, choices like cold natural juices, and green and black tea are great substitutes. Add a dash of mint to any of them and you’ll feel refreshed too!

  • Procure healthy snacks: Sleep deprivation can make your body crave unhealthy things. The best thing you can do is get some healthy options, like fruits or even something handy like smoothies.

  • Gather all your supplies: During an all-nighter it’s easy to get distracted. That’s why, one of the first things you have to do is invest time gathering the things you need to minimize your chances of standing and walking away from the task as hand.

  • Get off your phone: At 2am, nothing that will come your way through social media or personal messaging will be as important to make leave your study or essay session. Turn down the volume, disable all the alerts or turn it off for good measure. Remember, keeping your focus will lead to a more effective session.

  • Put engaging music: While people frown upon the music, some people love to use it to quiet down their thoughts. You can use them to feel more engaged, specially when you use movie soundtracks or video game music, as these are designed to create engagement from people, and will keep you focused.

When your only choice is to study or work all night, you need to prepare yourself for the task. That way, you can do something amazing with those valuable hours, and invest them the right way. The best thing you can do is use all-nighters as your ultimate resource, as they can damage your performance on the long run. Here at Marconi International University, we encourage continuous study so you can make the most out of your time that way. But if you are used to all-nighters, tell us your story in our comments or on our social media profiles!

Long study sessions at night, sometimes, are necessary. If you must, then do them right.
