| Many college students pick the habit of drinking more than the recommended amount of coffee per day. |
College is the place where people pick up habits. Sometimes is skipping breakfast, others is a new technique to learn lessons, but among the most frequent cases of new habits is the consumption of coffee. There’s an estimate of over 40% of people, ages 18 and 24, that drink coffee in a more than recommended dosage. This is a huge problem, as the substance that makes beverages appealing, caffeine, ingested in more than the recommended amount can have a negative effect on the body, even having the potential of causing addiction and generating a sort of withdrawal feeling in the people that stop consuming it abruptly.
What are the effects of coffee in your body?
As you surely know, coffee is a stimulant drink. It contains high levels of caffeine, and this acts as a hyper messenger for the central nervous system of your body. As it stands, it’s frequently used to generate alertness and concentration when consumed in moderate amounts. But several studies indicate that it can improve other parts of the cognitive process. This shows that with a constant consumption, the chances of developing diseases like Parkinson decrease.
While these studies have not shown conclusive results as a whole, there’s a distinct relationship between these factors that cannot be denied. Even so, the fact that the coffee, and caffeine as a whole, are nervous stimulants is enough reason to include it in your diet, as far as it’s done with care and avoiding the negative effects of it.
Why should you limit your coffee consumption?
Caffeine is one of the most consumed nervous stimulants in the world. And while some believe that it’s innocuous, the reality is that it can generate incredibly negative conditions for your body. One of the best indicators of the effects that the coffee has on your body is the fact that people have a relationship that's similar to those in which the people consume drugs: your body craves it, and without it, you enter a sort of withdrawal. Here are the top 5 reason why you might want to rethink drinking more than one or two cups of coffee per day:
- Headaches: While caffeine is often included in medicines to treat the migraines and headaches, the reality is that it’s incredibly negative for your brain when consumed in coffee. The blood flow to the brain is limited by its effects, and if you drink it you can generate booming headaches that will make want to take a break from your normal routine.
- Higher blood pressure: As nervous system stimulant, there’s a direct relationship between coffee and higher blood pressure. This can lead to a series of complication on your health and can increase risks of suffering dangerous chronic conditions
- Dehydration: Consuming coffee dehydrates your body incredibly fast and has laxative effects on your body. This, in turn, affects your cognitive processes and decreases the chances that your body has for producing hormones and enzymes for its normal functioning.
- Moodiness: Caffeine contrasts and suppresses the effects of serotonin in the body. In case you don’t know, this chemical is one of the few responsible for the happiness, and it’s produced in limited numbers. This means that coffee can affect your perception of the world and make you particularly prone to moodiness.
- Ability to rest: It’s no secret that coffee hinders sleep. More than that, the fact that the chemicals in a cup make you feel active and tired at the same time is one of the reasons why you should limit your consumption. This happens because your body is trying to get rid of it, and because of that you burn up almost all the energy it gives you.
We know that sometimes you might need a pick me up to keep your mind sharp, that’s why we are not telling you to quit it cold turkey. But you should lower your consumption to keep your body healthy and prepared to face the challenges that are going to make your life incredibly for the years to come. Here at Marconi International University, we want our students to learn and experience the unique experiences college has to offer!
