5 Tricks to Combat Homesickness

Homesickness is a terrible feeling, but you can't let it get the best of you.

One of the things that hit college students harder is the fact that, for a great chunk of that population, enrolling in an higher level institution means traveling far away from home, setting physical distance from all they’ve known for years. This is an incredibly hard decision to take, and once you are settled in your dorm, or when you feel sick or stressed it hits you harder: you’re away from those you know and in which you can count and have leaned on for a great deal of your life. Amazingly, this is one of the hardest things a college student has to face: the homesickness.

This feeling is incredibly strong and while for some it’s manageable, it’s always nice to have a bag of handy tricks to combat it, and here at Marconi International University, we want to give you 5 of those tricks, so that your experience in college is easier and more comfortable even with the homesickness monster roaming around.

Try local Experiences: When you’re in a new city, there are certain things they do that might not be habitual for you. Local experiences, like talking a walking over a park or a particular tour for the touristic attractions are great things to do when it comes to getting off your melancholy for your family and friends back home.

Experience with extracurricular activities: Sports, clubs and all those activities that happen in your college are great ideas to build up friendships and create activities that are perfect to distract you. These also help boost your self-esteem and have valuable things to share with other people in your new location.

Learn to prepare your favorite meals: One of the things that people in college miss the most is the meals back home. A great idea for you is to learn how to prepare the dishes that you love in order to have an instant pick-me-up whenever you feel blue with homesickness.

Work with new groups: Involving yourself with groups in college is ideal, as you have the chance to make your mind forget about what you are missing from homes. Besides, there’s a good chance that these new friends have the same homesickness, and you’ll be battling it together.

Establish friends/family time: While it’s indeed unhealthy to stick to your phone or computer to talk to your family and friends back home all day long, establishing a time just for them it’s ideal. A simple Skype call on fixated hours throughout the week and texting are great options to stay in touch without missing out on your new life. Make it a habit and you’ll release the pressure of homesickness with this valuable time.

Here at Marconi International University, you can experience the world and culture of Italy and Miami without missing out on important things on the matter. With the right mentality, you can reach the best results and combat homesickness with motivation and interesting activities throughout your days!
