| Prepare yourself for sucess giving your mind and body a much needed rest. |
Breathe in. Breathe out. Breathe in. Then out again. That was relaxing, right? For years, people have known the importance of breathing to calm down, but have ignored the fact that taking deep breaths are also a form of meditation. For college students that extra calm can make the difference between a high grade and a low score. Why is this? Relaxed minds can process information at a higher pace, making it vital for times of high pressure to stay calm. One of the things that can help you get to this state is the meditation.
But for some, learning how to meditate can be a hard thing to do. Distractions, fast shooting thoughts, and worries can be completely disturbing. They can refrain you from getting into the right mood to allow your brain to prepare for handling stressful activities. Do you want to learn how to meditate in simple steps? One of the first things you need to know is that you don’t have to be a totally silent place. When you are mindful and driven, you can even meditate while on the subway or in a crowded coffee shop. With that in mind, I will give you my tips to stay focused.
- Sit up straight or lay back completely still: While sometimes you cannot pick when and where you’ll need it, you’ll need to prepare your body for it. Straightening your back will increase the engagement of your core (down your abdomen) which is the center of your body control. It also allows better breathing and blood flow.
- Control your breathing: Oxygen is fuel for the body, and, when you control your breathing, you prepare your body to relax. Take deep breaths, then hold them in place for 5 seconds and exhale through your mouth. Repeat several times, engaging your lungs and diaphragm. The first times, you’ll feel it tighten up, but eventually, you’ll see how relaxing this is.
- Think of something placid: While some people seem to think to clear your mind it’s easy, it’s actually a hard feat. Concentrate on breathing and having a thought that makes you calm. Sometimes, music can help you achieve that relaxed state.
- Concentrate in your limbs: Another way to let go of the stress and relax, is by concentrating on your fingers and toes. This way, you don’t have to focus on other distracting factors. You can massage your hands, finger by finger. That will make it more relaxing.
Practice and I assure you that you’ll find every place calm enough to meditate. That way, you’ll have your mind prepared to face whatever challenge the world throws your way. Here at Marconi International University, we encourage our students to be mindful and to have the perfect mindset to face the academic challenges that will make them successful professionals. Try meditation and see how you get better at everything you endeavour.
