| One of the most important things for college students is a handy book with notes. |
College is for people that know how to turn themselves into highly efficient people. For that reason, one of the first things you need to do when you are in college is investing in your own growth. A valuable asset for you is to acquire note taking skills. This will prove to be highly valuable for you in your academic and labor field, as having notes done correctly can mean the difference between a correct and wrong answer in a test. Why? Because, sometimes, during lessons and courses, professors give out helpful hints at subjects that might be brought up in tests in the future. This is especially helpful if this is your first semester, as the notions will help you during your route to graduation.
There are a few helpful tips to note-taking:
- Read ahead: Nothing compares to knowing what’s going to be talked about in your course. It’s ideal for you to know the subject beforehand, so you can take notes in a much efficient manner.
- Create your own system: Every single one of us has the power to create something unique to take notes. Creating easy to follow indications for our notes it’s ideal. Maintain the system and it will be easier to understand them in the future.
- Keep them short: Use short phrases, words and even simple draws and symbols to keep your notes in order. Remember, brevity is vital as you need to be able to review them quickly. They should be done quickly and be easy to explain to yourself and others, so don’t sacrifice understandable notes for shortening your notes.
- Use highlighters: Another great way of taking notes is highlighting important notions. Concepts, things your professor stresses during class, all those things have potential to be test subjects. Use them with conscience, and maybe use more than one color, coding them according to what you want to highlight.
- Pass them to another paper: You can take simple notes in a paper, but most importantly, you need to understand them. While taking notes in class, most of the times you do it quickly, skipping words and jumbling content. Take time to pass them to a clean paper, preferably a three ring binder. Add extra info, sketches, diagrams or mental maps, that will make them more effective.
