7 Habits of Highly Successful College Students

Goals are achieved only if you really put your heart into it.

Success is not something that comes by chance. To reach your goals, you need to acquire the right mindset and prepare your whole life to achieve those goals. Ideally, you have to put yourself first and work to reach the finish line. For that reason, learning how to achieve and work it’s a full-time job, and sometimes, you need to learn certain things in order to get what you want in the end. For that reason, self-help books are at the top of people’s minds when it comes to improving their lives. One of the most sought-after tomes is “7 Habits of Highly Effective People” by Stephen Covey. In this book, you can find keys to increase your engagement to your goals and achieve better results in the long run. But what if I told you that there are habits that are almost perfectly made for college students, and that can help you achieve what you want. Well, they’re a fact and they’ve helped me, and people all over the world, achieve their goals in superior education levels.

1st Habit: Be prepared for class
Before going to bed, do-over your bag and college assignments. This way, you’ll be prepared all the time. Make sure to pack what you’ll need, put your keys in its place, find snacks and water, among other things that you need to take and you’ll have fewer things to worry about. Preparing for the class also includes reading the lesson before starting it, that way your brain will pick up the information right away.

2nd Habit: Have snacks at hand
Don’t forget about your stomach while studying and attending classes. Most professors will now frown upon snacks at class or in hallways, so make sure to carry some healthy options at hand. This will help keep your sugar levels under control and will avoid the dreaded sluggish feeling that you get when you are tired and hungry. Small fruit portions, natural bars, homemade whole cookies and bags of nuts are great options. Water and smoothies need to be on this list too, as dehydration is a serious concern for thought process too.

3rd Habit: Study every day
One of the first things that you need to do in order to be successful at college is to create study habits. One of those is reading lessons every single day. Check your planning and make sure to dedicate at least two hours of the day to re-read lessons. That way, the information will be attained in a more effective way when it’s required, for example during a test or a quick question in class.

4th Habit: Take breaks
College should not be taken as a prison sentence. You need to remember that you have to keep on doing important things, yes, but also take much-needed breaks from time to time. Let go of books and worries and focus on yourself from time to time. Take a relaxing bath, learn how to meditate or do yoga, all of those consists of nice breaks for your mind and soul. That way, you can focus your mind after the break in the things that are really important.

5th Habit: Learn to take notes
In this blog, we’ve spoken about how to take notes, and for a good reason: notetaking it’s an important skill for students! Notes are short portions of texts, simple analysis of texts or cues to study, and they are great for a quick do-over before a test. They are also important for you to prepare for future lessons, and to fixate information in a way that’s more simple and easy to understand for you.

6th Habit: Don’t compare yourself
Comparing yourself to classmates is the first way of undermining your motivation. Remember to keep your mind focused on your goals. Avoid thinking that some other person did this or that and you didn’t, just keep in mind what you have to do in the future. If there’s room for improvement, then go ahead, but don’t hold yourself to other’s standards. You go at your own pace and make the experience completely yours.

7th Habit: Get out of your comfort zone
College is the place to growth, and one of the things score-driven college students tend to forget is the world of experiences that open up in campuses. This is the time to enroll in an extra-academic course, take a theater class, explore another language, take a new sport, or even dancing lessons. These experiences will enrich your life, and make you release stress, allowing you to be more focused when it comes to academic areas.

Here at Marconi International University, we like to encourage our students to be incredibly successful. This will help them reach their goals and, in turn, help us educate incredible professionals for the work field.
