What’s the Difference Between Bachelor, Masters and Doctorate?

These three degrees have important differences that some people don't know about.

For people in the academic world, getting a degree is the ultimate goal. It's the final lapse in a race full of effort and work in order to reach the objective. The titles vary according to the complexity of the degree itself, and they are achieved often by reaching a previous one first. The idea of this article is that you learn how these three interact and that you understand the process involved in order to achieve one of them as your ultimate goal, whether it’s by reaching a different level of academic expertise, or simply knowing important information for you academic future. Bachelor

This is the first degree obtained at a higher education level. Another name for this degree is Undergraduate or Baccalaureate Degree. The completion of this level requires and an approximate of 40 collegiate courses, and 120 hours of academic work divided into 4 years. These are often given by regionally accredited institutions. It’s the most basic degree that you can obtain at a superior level. The term for the degree depends on the institution that accredits it and the nature of the degree itself, as there are Bachelor of Arts (B.A.), Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) and the Bachelor of Science (B.S.)

Masters

To pursue a Masters you need to have a previously approved and finished Bachelor’s degree related to the field of the master. This conforms another level of high education, and it’s known as the first graduate course you take. It requires up to 2 years of full-time study and it’s in the limits of 36 to 54 credits, divided into 12 or 18 college courses. Most Masters are taken in person, but some institutions offer programs for online learning courses. The term used to style one’s title depends on the nature of the master itself, being prevalent the Master of Arts (M.A.), Master of Business Administration (M.B.A) and Master of Science (M.S.)

Doctorate

A Doctorate is the higher level course that one can take as far as academic progress go. It’s often named as the final or terminal degree in a career and it doesn’t necessarily require the completion of a master's degree to obtain it, but this depends on the nature of the doctorate itself. The doctorate it’s not related to the medical degree, as you can acquire a doctorate for every field of work. The duration of the doctorate is around four years, and can be reduced to three or 2 and a half if you hold a previous and equivalent master’s degree in your preferred field of work. It required the completion of 90 to 120 credits, that equivalate to 30 to 40 courses. At the finishing level of this course, a thesis, capstone paper or supervised job are required to earn the degree. The two main titles earned at this level are Doctorate in Philosophy (PhD.) or  Doctorate in Education (Ed.D.)
