What’s the Importance of Sleeping When You are a College Student?

In order to have a better performance, it's integral for your body to rest.

Sleep is one of the misunderstood habits of humanity. It’s a physiological need to rest and recharge energies, which are necessary for the body to recycle and renew its cells. And while the phrase “Sleep is for the weak” it’s a mantra, the fact is that without it, our body would simply fail and shut down. Parent inherently know that their kids need to take naps to help them in their growth process, yet somehow it’s often misunderstood when it comes to grown-ups. Teenagers and young adults tend to dismiss the importance of a good sleep session when it comes to being productive and keeping mind and body balanced.

Why do you need to sleep?
Sleeping it’s a necessity that we as humans have. It’s important that you understand exactly what happens when you go to bed. Your brain needs rest, and sleep is the only way to achieve it: while you sleep, neurons lock the information and archive it properly, making it more achievable in the future. It also helps other physiological processes, like the cleanse and detox of the body while at rest, the renewal of the cells and such.

Ideally, you need to refrain from messing with your internal clock and resting time, as this harms the way your body works. If you skip sleep or have an irregular routine, your body will react as in an emergency. It’s more likely that you’ll gain weight, retain liquids, have digestive problems and headaches, among other things.

How can I improve my sleep?
While most people don’t have trouble sleeping, for others is important to know how to make themselves fall into Morpheus's arms without much trouble. For that reason, specialists recommend a series of techniques and habits to make your body relax right before your head hits the pillow, increasing the chances of having a restful night. So, read them and implement them right away.
  • Set a bedtime routine: Much like little kids, adults need a bedtime routine. Stick to it and make it functional for you.
  • Take a warm bath before setting to sleep: That cleans your body while relaxing it.
  • Avoid sugary drinks or coffee anytime around bedtime: These make you unrestful and excited, and those two are bad for sleeping.
  • Avoid screens: Tvs, smartphones, tablets, computers, or any screen take a toll on your sleep. Avoid using them at least 30 minutes before going to bed. Don’t take the phone to bed.
  • Make yourself some tea: While people frown with tea, the truth is it helps your body relax, and some infusions take it an extra step and make you feel ready to bed.
  • Go to bed early: When you want to go to bed, you need to make sure that you are getting the right amount of sleep. 6 hours is the minimum for your body to recharge.
