When I was a freshman college, I learned how to use one of the best and least used tools in the academic world: highlighters. They are tools for you to use and to make hard study sessions something interesting and unique for you. Highlighters help you focus and define important things from a text, but most importantly, they are the tools make the difference in the long run.
For me, highlighters are ideal tools for people that want to make sure to get the important things right away. Ideally, you should use the least number of colors possible and create a key for them. The reason behind this is that you can highlight all the important information, according to a certain and easily identifiable pattern. This will help when you have to check your notes of study guides quickly. They also help check up the materials, the professors or books (as long as they are yours, and not borrowed from the library or not someone else's) and get the important data right away.
But you don’t have to use them just to check up lines of text. To me, they can be used to mark down a complete paragraph or a series of phrases: surrounding them with highlighter can do the trick! In my case, I always looked up for college students selling study guides with classes and such from the courses I was going to take. Those were part of my normal study resources, and in time I learned that I just had to read before class and take those notes to class. Using highlighters to mark down things the professors stressed during the talks or adding up info with a pen and a post-it, they helped me in the long run: I did better at class using these two techniques. Why? Because when I had to do a quick study session, the content was already picked and defined, and I could go down quickly on the important data from every single lesson, thanks to those visual aides. Without a doubt, it made a difference in the way I studied, and helped me be more productive in the long run, as highlighters became my best friends!
