Are you Pulling an all-nighter?

Make sure to have all the necessary elements to make the most out of your late study sessions.

When you’re in college it’s easy to get carried away. Friends, other classes, gatherings, work and other million responsibilities can leave you little time to study for an upcoming test or writing an essay. We understand that problem, and honestly, don’t feel bad. It can happen even to the best student. Things can get slightly complicated and leave you just one option out: all-nighters. While they are not ideal for your health in terms of rest, sometimes that’s the only choice you have to face a test. That’s why here at Marconi International University, we bring you the best tips to pull an all-nighter.

To pull an all-nighter you need to remember some things: first of all, this cannot happen frequently! While studying at night might be effective for you, the lack of proper sleep gets your body (specially your brain) in emergency mode. Then, the information will be harder to pick up after several all-nighters in a row, and you’ll be wasting valuable sleep hours over nothing practical. For that reason, we recommend to take this route only when this is the only choice, as there are several options for you to make the most out when it comes to studying, that don’t require you sacrificing hours of sleep, and that are as effective as all-nighters, but without the physical damage on the long term.

With that said, here are some handy tips to use when all-nighters are your only option:
  • Get something to drink: Keeping yourself awake it’s vital. While caffeine and energizing drinks are frowned upon, choices like cold natural juices, and green and black tea are great substitutes. Add a dash of mint to any of them and you’ll feel refreshed too!

  • Procure healthy snacks: Sleep deprivation can make your body crave unhealthy things. The best thing you can do is get some healthy options, like fruits or even something handy like smoothies.

  • Gather all your supplies: During an all-nighter it’s easy to get distracted. That’s why, one of the first things you have to do is invest time gathering the things you need to minimize your chances of standing and walking away from the task as hand.

  • Get off your phone: At 2am, nothing that will come your way through social media or personal messaging will be as important to make leave your study or essay session. Turn down the volume, disable all the alerts or turn it off for good measure. Remember, keeping your focus will lead to a more effective session.

  • Put engaging music: While people frown upon the music, some people love to use it to quiet down their thoughts. You can use them to feel more engaged, specially when you use movie soundtracks or video game music, as these are designed to create engagement from people, and will keep you focused.

When your only choice is to study or work all night, you need to prepare yourself for the task. That way, you can do something amazing with those valuable hours, and invest them the right way. The best thing you can do is use all-nighters as your ultimate resource, as they can damage your performance on the long run. Here at Marconi International University, we encourage continuous study so you can make the most out of your time that way. But if you are used to all-nighters, tell us your story in our comments or on our social media profiles!

Long study sessions at night, sometimes, are necessary. If you must, then do them right.
